Tales From The Darkside – 1st Circle
George A. Romero
Paul Sparer, Catherine Battistone, John Marzilli
Laurel Entertainment, Jaygee Productions, Tribune Entertainment
1983, 1984, 1985
The legacy of historical horror anthology "Creepshow" (1982) by George Romero master of horror was not negligible. Beyond the influence of sequels and television production company Laurel Entertainment aimed at a television series about logic and structure with the "Creepshow". Due to mpleximatos with your name and the Warner Bros owned the rights, the Laurel Entertainment changed the name of the series in "Tales From The Darkside".
With the series creator George Romero and with the collaboration of many important persons of the scene as Michael McDowell and Tom Savini, "Tales From The Darkside" started his career in American television in 1983 by closing the curtain of 1988. It consists of a total of 90 episodes concentrated into 4 circles with each episode presenting a different story every time. The term is quite small, a little more than 20 minutes.
In the Greek market had enjoyed some of the episodes of this series in the golden era of VHS. Circulated a videotape usually 3 episodes as an anthology by maintaining the atmospheric intro with outdoor shots and haunting music. The title of Greek publications was "the Unknown Side of terror" but beyond these collections of some other episodes were released together under different and always picturesque titles like "call of terror", "the Curse of Lucifer", and "Death Breath".
Returning now to the episodes, the attractive is that many of them are based on stories from famous and gifted writers such as Stephen King, Clive Barker, Robert Bloch, Harlan Ellison, Michael McDowell, Frederik Pohl, Michael Bishop and Fredric Brown. All the episodes have the same freakish introduction with the view of the wooded countryside accompanied by eerie music composed his partner George Romero, Donald Rubinstein. In the same introduction can be found a small psarwtiko foreword by Paul Sparer (The House On Caroll Street), which aims to introduce us to an early climate of terror.
The first cycle that we are considering here consists of 24 episodes, including the pilot. Like all cycles, this is characterized by mild nature lightened terror, comical mood, unusual themes and reversibly finishes that are shocking. The interpretations are adapted to this "loose" style busting enthusiasm and passion although few times flirt with amateurism but without unpleasant results. Violence is limited and minimal gore with the series adopts a deliberately "friendly" style that makes it permissible for the general public.
The actor Victor Tayback who has played among others in the classic movie "the Butterfly" took part in the first episode of the entire series (The New Man) but also at last (Basher Malone).
With the exception of 4-5 episodes that seem indifferent, the total is more than just satisfactory. Some episodes are simply perfect both in inspiration and in execution. Regarding the cast, we come from asimoys actors up to big names such as Danny Aiello, Barnard Hughes, Carol Cane and Stuart Whitman. Participations surprises as they stood then Christian Slater, star of classic horror ' Suspiria ' Jessica Harper and NBA legend Kareem Abdul–Jabbar give an even spicier touch to the series.
The best episodes in my opinion are the following:
I'll Give You a Million where two men are experiencing the devastating consequences of choosing to sell their soul.
The Odds on which an undefeated stoichimatzis betting the date and time of death against a mysterious man that smells … death.
The Word Processor of the Gods in which a man inherited a word-processing program that erases from the world or displays anything written by its holder.
Levitation in which a ruthless young causes a magician to show him the trick of swinging with him as a Guinea pig. However, the results will be very unpleasant for the young …
Last Wish Grandma's where an old woman takes revenge in an original way her family that he intended to close at nursing home.
The Madness Room where a woman conspires with her lover to outplay her husband through a peculiar séances.
Answer Me in which a woman is bothered by the constant knocks a phone from the adjacent empty room whose previous tenant has died.
Anniversary Dinner where a young girl runs away from her boyfriend and is hosted by a strange couple which prepares a very special meal for the 25th anniversary.
It All Comes Out in the Wash which a corrupt businessman discovers a Chinese laundry that flushes the human "sins". Things like will take dramatic turn when the washer stops working …
Maybe the lighthearted tone of the series to his audience some friends while others may find the terror sufficiently offered "childish" and outdated. But believe me, many of the episodes of "Tales From The Darkside" is far more terrifying and shocking by many horror films today considering the horrific revelations unfold in unexpected finale. That deliberately chosen a more mild and comic style does not reduce the feeling of terror that is emitted.
The older might feel feelings of nostalgia replaying the episode of "Tales From The Darkside". Younger people have a good opportunity to check how should be the creative "cheesy" tremor. For the record let's mention that the series sprang up and one of the best horror movies vertebrate with similar name. This is the "Tales From The Darkside: The Movie ' of 1990 where George Romero again put his personal stamp.

Plethora of exceptional and inspirational episodes with great distinction between them, reversibly finishes which often cause shock, many valuable contributors from the world of terror and not only neat combination cheesy taste, black humor and genuine terror, atmospheric introduction with wonderful music that haunts.
Little casually episodes, some interpretations are not so satisfactory, shrunken gore.
