He buried her alive... to save his soul!
We are somewhere in the 19th century. A young man goes to remote Luxury House of arrabwniastikias, Madeline, aiming to make the wedding of moods and take her with him. But there he meets the mysterious and pessimistic Redrick brother Usher who tries to prevent the new to carry out his plans. The reason is a terrible curse that has fallen on the same, in his sister and generally all Usher family ancestors. Destination of the wretched family is the weakness and … death.
The "House of Usher" is the first film of the so-called "Poe cycle" that directed the King of B movies Roger Corman and definitely one of the best. This circle dominated the Filmography of the Director's great the first half of the sixties, giving us unique Gothic high quality horror movies by clicking on the undying legacy in world culture the Edgar Allan Poe.
As in most films in the cycle, Corman chose the huge Vincent Price in the role of the tragic figure of Roderick Usher, flanked by three other actors. Yet this little cast is sufficient to create an exquisite film atmospheric terror. Needless to say, the Price is once again impressive giving a magnificent, poetic interpretation that is shocking. But the Myrna Fahey as the tragic Madeline Usher gets along famously being one of the key factors when it comes to horror the tragic moment of fulfilment of the curse!
O Vincent Price apparently dyed his hair white to play the role of Roderick Asher since then was still fairly new.
Credit must be given and the screenwriter Richard Matheson who adapted the original story into the structure of an integrated film. Generally the transport of Poe's story is done successfully, with minimal modifications do not disturb but instead to give special meaning to the facts by intensifying the drama. The Corman through the gruesome footage of brilliantly showcases the gruesome theme of premature burial that was causing great fear among the people of the 19th century when he wrote stories of the Poe exploiting such fears.
The beautiful decorations with bright colors just enchant. The only thing in the film is quite outdated effects that in some cases – such as the great fire towards the end – showing too fake. Of course we're talking about old movie but I believe – without being a specialist – that there was possibility to doyleytoyn more and more plausible. Be that as it may, however, the "House of Usher" is a delightful old-fashioned horror movie you see very pleasantly satisfying gothic horror fans and not only.
