Think inside the box
Another interesting claustrophobic thriller – by this time Spain-which leverages the success recipe of the cult classic "Cube" (1997). To "Fermat's Room" (original title "La habitación de Fermat") does not constitute an Threepenny or meaningless copy of heritages of historical film of Vincenzo Natali but passes its components through its own mathematical sieve arriving in a remarkable effect in General. And do not be afraid of math. Because although it is "cerebral" somehow film, however does not display at that tricky complexity that will mperdeye the General, non-specialist audience.
What we have here then? There is the traditional group of trapped called in to solve the mystery surrounding incarcerated and at the same time to stay alive. Because the red room where cornered has the special feature of the walls to move inward at regular intervals. The mysterious stranger who has called them the Vice to sends them via mobile phone various formula puzzles that trapped must solve to delay contraction. It gradually emerges that the relationship of encapsulated within is deeper than it originally seemed. I manage to solve riddles and survive or will be crushed by the walls that approach increasingly?
The "Fermat's Room" presents some remarkable and certainly welcome diversity. These consist mainly in mathematical patterns that uses as a basic plot supplements. E.g. beyond mathematicians riddles we observe that during their involvement in the dangerous game of unknown host them have gotten from him names of famous mathematicians as "nicknames". Also call itself presupposed solve a mathematical spazokefalias. The same room has in turn expected table intended to meet mathematical minds but impresses and visually with the deep red color. All these peculiarities added to its original attractive idea and combined with the whodunit character and some unexpected plot developments show that we are dealing with a great effort that deserves praise.
In the film there is also a cameo appearance of Director Luis Piedrahita, and specifically on the cover of a book inside the room that he has written himself.
It's all so rosy? Apparently not as you can see from the rank below us. The "Fermat's Room" despite the earnest effort, lacks coherence and adequacy of bad. The simplifications and the facilities in which resort to proceed the events turn out eyes. The interpretations are also not pooping the seriousness that we would like with the actors seem few in terms of realistic embodiment stressed-out victims fighting for their lives. The unexpected absence of beating gore in turn negative as such an idea clearly expect more violent image with even a few drops of blood to flow here and there … but just hot air.
Not to be misunderstood, the "Fermat's Room" is not a bad movie at all. Just expect more and eventually not got. I am even those smart shots from above showing the room as well as a few scenes outside it. And somewhere here the praise stopped. Give him a chance however and you won't be disappointed. Maintaining interest is guaranteed despite sporadic defects.
