Impressive variety of colors, great music, surreal atmosphere, dynamic ending with strong doses of shock and violence.
Excruciatingly slow pace, inadequate scenario with extensive time indifferent developments, the abortive attempt to look "innovative" like film.
The Nicolas Refn Winding (Only God Forgives, Drive, Rising Valhala) is known for psychedelia and Visual Feast for his films and for the difficult, surreal style that employ several of these. The new film's work titled ' The Demon ' Neon follows similar paths moving at this time in the category of horror. Informative, some elements of the case but also the style of the movie reminded me of slightly surreal horror film "Starry Eyes" by 2014.
' The Demon ' Neon explores the competitive world of modeling and along with it all about human emotions that can emerge as the jealousy, malice, the admiration, the obsession with beauty, narcissism, etc. Moving to these concepts the film partly manages to pass the messages while simultaneously cares to "hypnotizes" often the viewer through surrealistic short sequences, rich in colors and musicality. Its an excellent technique though, although it makes the film "separate" is not sufficient to make it and liked it in its entirety.
Originally the role of Jesse was going to get Carey Mulligan (Drive, Inside Llewyn Davis). Eventually replaced by Elle Fanning.
The two big drawbacks of The ' Demon ' Neon found in rhythm and in the scenario. Basically we are talking here of two interdependent concepts after the plethora of dull and tedious scenes fatal shrinks our interest for the movie Nicolas Winding Refn surely had to graft his work with many interesting and innovative ideas while reducing the duration of to keep the interest of the viewer in a row. If for example the film contained more dynamic scenes like those of the last explosive eikosaleptoy would certainly much more interesting.
Another thing that bothers me is the Director's attempt to give the job of air of innovation and honest experimentation but fails as excessive sophistication with which the main theme is presented denies the film a sense of authenticity. I liked the provocativeness of certain scenes but with xenerwse the exaggeration of some others. In summary, therefore, the last work of Refn satisfies only partially while rather disappoint those expecting a new triumph of experimental horror.
The Neon DemonMovie Review Highlights
- The paranoid stage where a competitive model tries to drink blood from the hand of Jesse.
- Sexy scene where a guy (Keanu Reeves!) puts a knife in her mouth heroine with overtly sexually suggestive.
- The shocking last 20 minutes where the words violence and paranoia are not sufficient to describe what awful happening.
